Teeth Cleaning

A dental hygienist is a board-certified specialist trained to perform professional teeth cleaning in dental offices.  This deep cleaning is recommended every six months and is essential to removing plaque that even the most stringent brushing and flossing cannot remove.

Professional cleaning is not a replacement for brushing and flossing.  Teeth cleaning (or prophylaxis) is another step provided to help prevent gingivitis, cavities, and periodontal disease from developing.  Removal of the remaining plaque keeps bacteria from growing on the surface of the teeth.

Digital x-rays are taken once yearly to assess the bones and root structures in the jaw.  The images obtained can help identify potential problems that need to be addressed and are painless.

The plaque is removed from between the teeth and at the gum line with a scaling tool.  The teeth are scrubbed with a gritty toothpaste and then flossed.  Any remaining debris is then rinsed from the mouth.

When the teeth are all clean, Dr. DiMattia will perform an in-depth examination of the teeth and soft tissues of the mouth.

The reward for getting your teeth cleaned is a new toothbrush, floss, and a sample of toothpaste.  You can put the toothpaste and floss in your overnight bag and throw away your old toothbrush (it needs to be replaced every six months).
