Laser Dentistry

Lasers are becoming more and more useful in many areas of life and medicine.  Dentistry is one of many industries positively impacted by new laser applications.  Many procedures are now more efficient and faster, as well as offering anesthetic-free treatments.

Laser energy has shown significant benefit in treating mouth ulcers, lesions, and cold sores.  A quick, 15-minute laser session can relieve pain and promote faster healing than traditional topical or oral medications.

The patient and technician wear eye protection during all laser procedures.  The laser is directed through the skin affected by the ulcer or cold sore.  The light beam reduces pain by sealing off the nerve endings in that area, and the virus responsible is destroyed to prevent it from spreading to the surrounding tissues.

When tooth roots are causing pain, it can be agonizing.  Laser energy is very effective in the immediate treatment of tooth pain and sensitivity by suppressing the nerve fibers in the sensitive areas and sealing the tubules of the root.

TMD pain is alleviated with a light beam that heals the nerves in the jaw and increases blood circulation for faster healing.  The disc (soft cushion) between the ball and socket of the jaw joint can also be restored faster with laser treatment.

Dr. DiMattia can perform pain-free filling procedures with the use of a laser when preparing the tooth and removing the cavity.  The laser eliminates the need for an injection of anesthesia and the use of a noisy drill.
